General description:

  • A database administrator (DBA) is responsible for the performance, integrity and security of a database.
  • Additional role requirements are likely to include planning, development and troubleshooting.

Requirements:

  • 3 years PostgreSQL Database Administration experience – Priority
  • BS Degree in one of the following subject areas: Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Technology or related field preferred
  • 4 – 5 years IT operation with strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices
  • Understanding of, and experience with, server-client computing and relational database environments
  • Experience with data management and data processing flow charting techniques
  • Knowledge of reporting and query tools and practices.

Essential job functions:

  • Installation and configuration of database engines
  • Monitoring database server resources
  • Database design and development
  • Managing and controlling database access
  • Ensuring that databases meet user requirements
  • Liaising with programmers, applications/operational staff, IT project managers and other technical staff
  • Reporting, documentation and operating manuals
  • Testing and modifying databases to ensure that they operate reliably
  • Providing user training, support and feedback
  • Writing, testing and implementing disaster recovery plans
  • Archiving data.

Key responsibilities:

  • Establishing the needs of users and monitoring user access and security
  • Monitoring performance and managing parameters to provide fast query responses to front-end users
  • Mapping out the conceptual design for a planned database in outline
  • Considering both back-end organization of data and front-end accessibility for end-users
  • Refining the logical design so that it can be translated into a specific data model
  • Further refining the physical design to meet system storage requirements
  • Installing and testing new versions of the DBMs
  • Maintaining data standards, including adherence to the data protection act
  • Writing database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata)
  • Controlling access permissions and privileges
  • Developing, managing and testing back-up and recovery plans
  • Ensuring that storage, archiving, back-up and recovery procedures are functioning correctly
  • Capacity planning
  • Working closely with it project managers, database programmers and multimedia programmers
  • Communicating regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security
  • Commissioning and installing new applications and customizing existing applications to make them fit for purpose.

Work conditions:

  • On-call availability
  • Willingness and ability to travel and be away for long periods of time at a go.
